Vol. 542 No. 4

Written Answers. - Overseas Missions.

John Gormley

Question:

59 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Defence the role Irish military officers serving in NATO headquarters are playing during the campaign against Afghanistan; and if the Irish officers' role in NATO headquarters has changed in any way since the atrocities of 11 September 2001 in the United States. [24465/01]

There are no Irish military personnel serving in the NATO HQ.

A total of four Irish military personnel are attached to the Liaison Office of Ireland to Partnership for Peace which is located at NATO HQ in Brussels. A fifth officer acts as the KFOR-SFOR liaison officer and military representative to the Partnership Co-operation Cell-SHAPE located in Mons.

These officers continue to fulfil their roles as liaison officers in the context of our participation in Partnership for Peace and KFOR-SFOR. Their roles have not changed since the atrocities of 11 September 2001 and they are not participating in any actions related to the current campaign against Afghanistan.
