Vol. 542 No. 4

Written Answers. - Job Losses.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

67 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if the inter-agency task force established for the town of Dunmanway following the closure of the main industry in the town in 2000 has had success in attracting a replacement industry to Dunmanway; and the position in relation to the task force including the number of times it has met recently. [24777/01]

The Dunmanway inter-agency task force was established in response to the announced closure of the facility with effect from 11 February 2000 with the loss of 113 jobs. The task force is chaired by IDA Ireland and comprises representatives from Enterprise Ireland, FÁS, the county enterprise board and the county manager for west Cork. The factory was purchased by O'Flynn Construction on 31 August 2000. This company has developed major office parks such as the university technology park in Cork and the Eastgate Business Park at Little Island. O'Flynn Construction have collaborated with IDA Ireland in the production of a colour brochure to advertise the factory which is being marketed for a replacement industry.

There have been a number of visits to the facility but, so far, only one of the companies has shown some interest in the factory. However, efforts are continuing to be made to secure a tenant. The task force is now completing its final report which is expected to be submitted to me in November, 2001.
