Vol. 542 No. 5

Written Answers. - Bovine Diseases.

John Perry

Question:

207 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the criteria used for the depopulation of herd due to brucellosis; the allowances given for pedigree to normal stock animals; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24994/01]

Depopulation of a herd due to brucellosis is considered where there is active infection in the herd and where veterinary opinion is that the herd cannot be saved by ongoing testing and is a serious risk to contiguous herds and to human health. Depopulations are only effected with the agreement of the herd-owners concerned. A herdowner whose herd is depopulated, totally or partially, may qualify for compensation payment by way of reactor grant or net differential valuation amount plus a depopulation grant for each animal removed as a reactor. The conditions attaching to payment and the payment arrangements which include special provisions in relation to pedigree animals are detailed in the documentation given to the herdowner at the time of the disease breakdown. The herdowner also receives payment of salvage price by the factory.
