Question:

248 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the total acreage of potatoes grown in the country in 2001; the most prominent varieties; the value of the crop; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25299/01]

Potato production figures for 2001 are not yet available. However the total area of potatoes grown in 2000 was 13,900 hectares, giving a production of about 474,000 tonnes with an estimated value of £78 million. The most prominent varieties grown were Rooster, Kerr's Pink, British Queen, and Record, in that order.
