Vol. 542 No. 5

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Michael Creed

Question:

475 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education and Science the situation regarding a school extension at a location (details supplied) in County Cork. [25197/01]

The school referred to by the Deputy is one of two schools currently serving the post-primary needs of the area concerned. The combined enrolment of these schools, currently at around 720, has declined significantly in recent years. Projections indicate that this trend will continue for the foreseeable future. In the circumstances, the issue of rationalisation of post-primary facilities in the area was raised with both sets of trustees last year. A decision regarding the accommodation needs of the school concerned awaits the outcome of these deliberations. The school authorities have been advised, however, that any works required at the school on health and safety grounds will be considered for grant aid.
