Vol. 543 No. 1

Written Answers. - Health Services.

Bernard Allen

Question:

166 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will make a statement on recent comments by a person (details supplied) that the cost to the Irish health services of largely reported and largely preventable adverse events happening to patients while in the care of medical professions in hospitals and impacting on their well being could be as high as £2 million per year. [25755/01]

The comments made by Professor Bill Runciman at a recent conference in Dublin were based on applying data derived from the Australian experience to Ireland. A comprehensive risk management system based on incident reporting will be introduced as part of the new enterprise liability system for handling clinical negligence claims.
