Vol. 543 No. 1

Written Answers. - Smoking Survey.

Alan Shatter

Question:

58 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Health and Children if he proposes to undertake a national smoking survey. [24835/01]

The survey of lifestyle, attitudes and nutrition – SLAN – published in 1999, provides data on the modifiable lifestyle risk factors associated with heart disease, including smoking. This survey is a representative cross-section of the Irish adult population. A national sample was estimated which could show differences according to social class status in key variables, including smoking.

This survey is due to be repeated in 2002 and will include analysis of national smoking levels and provide the results that will produce reliable baseline data which can be used in future policy and programme planning.
