Vol. 543 No. 2

Written Answers. - National Identity Card.

Michael Ring

Question:

463 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Health and Children the proposals in place for an age card that everyone must carry an identity card in the context of the Public Health (Tobacco) Bill, 2001. [26987/01]

Within the context of the Public Health (Tobacco) Bill, 2001, I am not proposing to provide for the introduction of a national identity card with regard to age verification for the purchase of tobacco products. I am advised that at present there is a voluntary scheme in operation in relation to the issue and use of age cards with regard to the purchase of alcohol which is the responsibility of the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform.
