Question:

504 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the wage bill involved in running each local authority for each of the past five years; the permanent job content that this represents; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26299/01]

The information requested is not available in my Department. On the basis of information supplied to my Department by local authorities, the following is an estimate of the total wage bill for the past five years: 1996 – £567.58 million; 1997 – £605.80 million; 1998 – £637.71 million; 1999 – £658.80 million; 2000 – £697.34 million. I have no breakdown of the wage bill as between permanent and tem-

porary posts.
