Vol. 543 No. 2

Written Answers. - Traveller Accommodation.

Austin Deasy

Question:

118 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will introduce a licensing system to ensure that Travellers can move from one transient site to another only when sufficient places are available and that the local authority in question co-ordinates the moves and that no such moves will involve more than six caravans. [26278/01]

The guidelines for accommodating transient Traveller families issued by my Department in June 2000 advise local authorities to encourage Traveller families to ascertain the position regarding accommodation before moving to another area. The guidelines also advise local authorities to give priority to Traveller families who reserve places on transient sites in advance, where such sites are provided. The management of transient sites, including control of admission to the sites, is a matter for the relevant local authorities within the above framework and a licensing system as outlined in the question is not envisaged at this stage.
