Vol. 543 No. 2

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

Paul Connaughton

Question:

806 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason a decision has not been made on an application by a person (details supplied) in County Galway for a higher education grant; the position regarding this application; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26426/01]

My Department understands that the person, to whom the Deputy refers, applied to County Galway Vocational Education Committee, the body charged with the administration of the scheme in this case, for funding under the third level maintenance grants scheme for trainees, 2000. The VEC awarded the candidate a part maintenance grant in respect of the year in question, on the basis of reckonable income for the tax year ending 5 April 2000.

The candidate subsequently appealed the rate of grant awarded and queried the calculation of reckonable income in her case. Her appeal was submitted for review to my Department, by the VEC. A reply has recently issued to the VEC and my Department understands that the VEC will shortly be in contact with the candidate directly regarding the advice received.
