Written Answers. - Port Development.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

78 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the proposals he has for harbour development at Dungarvan, County Waterford; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27129/01]

Responsibility for the maintenance and development of Dungarvan Harbour lies with the local authority in the first instance. A feasibility study on the development of the harbour was forwarded to my Department by the Urban District Council in 1998. This study focused primarily on developing the harbour to service marine tourism and leisure facilities. The marine tourism grant scheme is one of five sub-measures of the overall tourism measure of the national development plan and is currently being prepared by my Department in consultation with the Department of Tourism, Sport and Recreation which has responsibility for the implementation of the overall measure. Until the scheme is launched and formal application forms and guidelines are available, applications cannot be accepted. However, all parties who have expressed an interest in the scheme will be sent details and an application form as soon as they are available.

Once the grant scheme is in place and a formal application received from the promoters of these projects, they will be assessed in accordance with the procedures laid down under the scheme. In March 2001 my Department received from the Urban District Council an updated report on urgently required remedial works to the quay wall at Davitt's Quay. My Department has allocated funding of £120,000 for these repair works in the current year costing a total of £160,000.

Question:

79 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the proposals he has for the development of Heilbhic Harbour, County Waterford; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27130/01]

Responsibility for the maintenance and development of Heilbhic Harbour, County Waterford rests with Waterford County Council in the first instance. As the harbour is located in a Gaeltacht area the question of funding development works is a matter for the Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands.
