Vol. 544 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Transport.

John Perry

Question:

261 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 486 of 9 October 2001, he will state the progress made on the report from Bus Éireann regarding the extension of the bus service for persons (details supplied) in County Sligo; when a decision will be made; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28172/01]

The position generally is that under the terms of the primary school transport scheme, only eligible children qualify for free transport. In order to be eligible, children must live at least two miles from and be attending their nearest national school.

A report regarding the children in question was received recently. As they reside less than two miles from their nearest national school, they are not basically eligible for free transport. The children are currently availing of concessionary fare paying transport to the school in question.
