Vol. 544 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

274 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will authorise the invitation of tenders for the new building for Gaelscoil Cillchoca, Kilcock, County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28310/01]

My Department has received an application for grant-aid towards the cost of a building project at Gaelscoil Cillchoca, Kilcock, County Kildare.

The Deputy will appreciate that there has been a massive and unprecedented increase in the funds allocated by this Government to the building programme at all levels. The allocation in the current year is £370.5 million, €470.4 million. This is almost four times the allocation made by the previous Government in 1997. This level of funding has enabled my Department to undertake a record number of building projects, and it is my intention to continue this rate of progress in overcoming the deficit arising from many past years and in meeting the needs of the present day.

Decisions relating to the rate of progress to construction of individual projects, including Gaelscoil Cillchoca, will be taken as in previous years in the light of the allocations to be made for school building purposes in the forthcoming Estimates.

Question:

277 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will provide information in relation to the provision of the required extension to Scoil Dara, Kilcock, County Kildare, under various headings (details supplied). [28313/01]

Stage 6 – tender action and report – in respect of the proposed extra facilities at Scoil Dara, Kilcock, County Kildare has been examined within the Department.

The proposed extension will consist of eight general classrooms; one science laboratory; one art and craft room; one woodwork room; one metalwork room; one computer room; one mechanical drawing room; one home economics room; three social studies rooms; administration office, toilets, cloaks and locker areas and stores.

My Department's post-primary building unit has indicated to the school authorities that consideration is being given to formally approving the tender recommended for acceptance by their design team. This approval, however, is subject to confirmation that the contractor can meet the standard contractual requirements, that is, evidence of tax clearance, membership of CIF, and so on. Confirmation of these items is currently awaited before the matter can be progressed. This will be a 12 month contract.

The stage 3, developed sketch scheme, submission was recently received in my Department's post primary building unit and is currently being considered. Once this stage is approved the project will progress to stage 4. The question of authorising tenders to be invited for the project will not arise until stage 6, tender action and report.
