Vol. 544 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Sports Stadium.

Derek McDowell

Question:

104 Mr. McDowell asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the amounts paid to date to each company or individual providing executive services for the proposed Campus/ Stadium Ireland project; the projected amounts that will be paid to each such company or individual in 2002; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27891/01]

Provision of Exchequer finance for the development of Sports Campus Ireland is made by way of subhead C6 of my Department's Vote. To date this year, Campus and Stadium Ireland Development Limited, CSID, the company set up to oversee the development of the Sports Campus Ireland project, has received a total of almost £15 million from that subhead and prior to that a total of just under £2.5 million was paid out by the Department of the Taoiseach during 2000, when that Department had responsibility for the project. CSID awarded a contract for the provision of executive services to a team headed by Magahy and Company Limited. Under the contract the cost of the executive services team has been capped at 1.8% of development costs and payments to the company are made by CSID.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

107 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if he has figures for the potential for job creation from the Stadium/Campus Ireland project; if a survey has been conducted by or on behalf of his Department on this matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23206/01]

Trevor Sargent

Question:

253 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation whether proposals for the use of the Abbotstown sports campus as a home venue for a soccer team in a new European league are being included and assessed in a report by consultants (details supplied); and when this report will be available to the public. [28307/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 107 and 253 together.

The feasibility study, A Stadium for the New Century, which is available in the Library of the House and on the Web, includes a section, "Economic Impact Assessment", which deals with the social and economic impact, including job creation, of the proposed stadium. It was estimated that during the construction phase of the project a total of 7,506 full time jobs could be created while 23 permanent and 560 event related operating jobs would be created following completion of the construction phase.

The terms of reference for the independent overview of the cost of the Stadium and Sports Campus Ireland project stated that the consultants should also "ascertain the direct and indirect benefits" of the project. This would include estimates for the potential for job creation from the project. The terms of reference did not require either set of consultants to comment on the possible use of Sports Campus Ireland as a home venue for a soccer team in a new European league as no such proposal has been put forward for consideration.

The cost overview has now been completed and the final report has been presented to the steering group of senior officials appointed by Government to oversee the work. As soon as I receive the final report from the steering group with their advice, I intend submitting it to Government for its consideration. I have already indicated to the House that, until the report has been considered by Government, I do not intend to make any statement on its contents.

Question No. 108 answered with Question No. 78.
