Vol. 544 No. 3

Written Answers. - Animal Feedstuffs.

John Perry

Question:

220 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the proposals, if any, for traceability on all animal feedstuff and mineral supplements; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28479/01]

Under EU legislation, manufacturers and distributors of mineral mixtures and feedingstuffs are required to maintain a record of all product sold giving the name and address of the purchaser and the date and quantity sold. The objective underlying this requirement is to enable immediate and complete recall of product in the event of a risk being identified to the food chain. In addition to the above, the Commission has recently submitted a proposal to Council for a traceability system covering genetically modified organisms, GMOs, in feedingstuffs. This system, if adopted, will require traceability of all feedingstuffs containing or produced from GMOs from the farmer producing the feedingstuff right throughout the feed chain to the farmer feeding his stock.
