Vol. 544 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Placement.

Pat Carey

Question:

487 Mr. P. Carey asked the Minister for Education and Science if further to previous parliamentary questions he will provide appropriate education for a person (details supplied) in Dublin 11. [28875/01]

In February of this year my Department sanctioned an allocation of nine hours per week home tuition for the child in question pending the arrangement of a suitable educational placement. I understand that this allocation was not availed of.

Subsequently, following an investigation of the child's needs by my Department's inspectorate, a placement was offered to the child in a special school in the Dublin area. My Department sanctioned a special needs assistant for the school to cater specifically for the child's needs. However, I understand that the pupil did not avail of this placement.

I have asked my Department's inspectorate to contact the child's family with a view to seeing how his educational needs can be addressed.
