I propose to take Questions Nos. 145 and 146 together.
The following tables indicate the number of cases of BSE reported in this country for each month to date since 1989; the age of each positive animal and the county in which each case was detected. The information relating to the county of birth of each of the positive animals is not readily available in the format required.
The number of confirmed cases of BSE has increased this year, as a result of the additional surveillance conducted among fallen and casualty animals and among animals over thirty months of age. Of the 210 cases confirmed this year, 83 were confirmed in fallen animals which would not, in any event, have been intended for the human food chain. Finally, it is noteworthy that despite the vastly increased levels of active surveillance this year – 499,899 tests – no case has been confirmed in an animal born after May 1996. This is a positive indication that the enhanced BSE controls introduced in 1996 are having the desired results.

My Department publishes an information note on its website, which includes details of the number of positive cases, the overall number of animals tested and found positive under the targeted active surveillance programme and the measures in place to control and eradicate BSE in Ireland. This information note is currently updated on a weekly basis.
