Vol. 545 No. 1

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Dick Spring

Question:

250 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the sewage treatment system in Tarbert, County Kerry, is completely at variance with EU standards and is causing environmental damage to the estuary; and the timescale for the provision of a system which meets EU standards. [29623/01]

No such proposal for improvement of the Tarbert treatment system was included in the list of water and sewerage schemes submitted by Kerry County Council in response to my Department's request to local authorities to undertake fresh assessments of the needs for capital works in their areas and to prioritise their proposals on the basis of the assessments. These priority lists were taken into account in the framing of the Water Services Investment Programme 2000-2002, announced in July 2000. In the meantime, Kerry County Council has submitted a proposal to upgrade some 33 existing small sewerage schemes in the county, including the Tarbert scheme. This proposal will be considered in the context of the next phase of the programme in the light of the Council's identified priorities at the time.

Question:

251 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if provision has been made by him to provide the Ballylongford-Tarbert industrial land bank with an adequate water supply. [29624/01]

The north-east Kerry water supply scheme stage one, phase two, includes proposals to serve the Ballylongford area. The scheme was included on the list of water and sewerage schemes submitted by Kerry County Council in response to my Department's request to local authorities to undertake fresh assessments of the needs for capital works in their areas and to prioritise their proposals on the basis of the assessments. The priority lists were taken into account in the framing of the Water Services Investment Programme 2000-2002 which was announced in July 2000. Because of the level of competing demand, the limited funding available and the need to prioritise individual proposals on a national basis it has not been possible to include the scheme in the programme.
