Vol. 545 No. 1

Written Answers. - Rail Services.

David Stanton

Question:

58 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Public Enterprise her plans to provide additional rolling stock, including carriages, on the mainline rail network; the type of new carriages to be provided; when they were ordered; the numbers and costs involved; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [29771/01]

In addition to the 80 diesel railcars already on order for delivery in 2002 and 2003, which will be used on some mainline services, the national development plan also provides for the acquisition by Iarnród Éireann of 20 new mainline rail carriages.

I understand that Iarnród Éireann is currently evaluating proposals in that regard but that the board has not yet taken a decision in the matter and no formal proposals have been submitted to my Department.
