Vol. 545 No. 1

Written Answers. - Railway Stations.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

128 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the extent to which commuter rail stations are being or have been modified to facilitate the use of extra rail carriages; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [29994/01]

Iarnród Éireann has informed me that all platforms on the outer suburban network serving Dublin have been extended to cater for eight car trains. Many of the platforms on the DART rail line are also capable of taking eight car trains. However, a number of DART platforms, particularly Tara Street, require extensions to accommodate eight car DART trains. In this regard, planning is under way on a DART upgrade project and Exchequer funding has been provided for platform extensions and increased power supply to facilitate eight car DART trains.

In relation to Tara Street, proposals to develop the station facilities and site, including platforms, are awaiting planning approval from Dublin Corporation.
