Vol. 545 No. 2

Written Answers. - Flood Relief.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

62 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Finance the position regarding the Cashen draining project, County Kerry; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30016/01]

As the Deputy is aware, the final engineering report on the flooding problem in the Feale Cashen estuary indicated that pumping would be the most effective solution. It is necessary to test this approach by carrying out a trial in one part of the catchment over a period of at least one year. Consent to the installation of pumping equipment for the trial has been obtained from the landowner and from Kerry County Council and an electrical supply has been arranged.

Construction of a pumphouse will commence as soon as weather and ground conditions allow in the spring of next year and commissioning of the equipment will take place during the summer.
