Vol. 545 No. 2

Written Answers. - Health Expenditure.

Jim Mitchell

Question:

93 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Finance if he has satisfied himself that his previously stated position that value for money must be secured in the area of health expenditure still applies in view of the levels of increased voted expenditure to the Health Vote which he has sanctioned. [30210/01]

I assure the Deputy that I am anxious to ensure value for money in all areas of public expenditure, not simply in relation to the health service. Spending on health has doubled in the four years to 2001, while the numbers employed have also grown substantially. Against that background, my colleague, the Minister for Health and Children and I share a concern about obtaining the best value for money from this level of investment. I am therefore particularly pleased to see this aspect featuring so prominently in the National Health Strategy, Quality and Fairness: A Health System for You, published earlier this week.

Question No. 94 answered with Question No. 53.
