Vol. 545 No. 3

Written Answers. - Disposal of Animal Carcases.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

100 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the number of locations throughout the country at which carcases arising from the bovine destruct scheme or foot and mouth disease are stored or disposed of throughout the country; the manner and method of the disposal; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30379/01]

The meat and bonemeal produced by the rendering of carcases from animals purchased under the EU purchase for destruction scheme has been stored under Department supervision in fine locations around the country pending incineration. Arrangements for incineration abroad are at present being negotiated. In relation to animals culled as a result of FMD, the position is that the infected flock and one contiguous suspect flock in County Louth, were deep buried in situ, under the supervision of the county council. The remainder of the animals slaughtered on a precautionary basis as a result of FMD have been rendered into meat and bone meal and sent abroad for incineration.
