Vol. 545 No. 3

Written Answers. - Tax Collection.

Question:

111 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Finance if he has satisfied himself that the Revenue Commissioners have fulfilled all their responsibilities in relation to alleged commercial operators, working out of the illegal encampment at the Dodder, Rathfarnham, Dublin 14. [30400/01]

I am advised by the Revenue Commissioners that for reasons of confidentiality they are precluded from divulging the outcome of specific enquiries into the tax affairs of third parties. However, I can state that all information received by the Revenue Commissioners about possible tax evasion is evaluated and acted on as necessary.

In particular where information is received, or becomes available, about commercial activity the registration status of the operators is checked for income tax and value-added tax.

In addition Customs and Excise enforcement units carry out vehicle registration tax enquiries in connection with foreign registered vehicles and any excise issues considered appropriate, including the use of rebated hydrocarbon oil in motor vehicles. These on- site inspections usually involve joint operations with the Garda Síochána.
