Vol. 545 No. 3

Written Answers. - Prison Accommodation.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

142 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he has received a report from the prison service concerning the future of Shanganagh Castle; the options which are being considered in this regard; the consideration which has been given to the views of the Prison Officers' Association and Shankill Community Association; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30266/01]

I have been informed by the director general of the Irish Prisons Service that the group formed to examine the feasibility of continuing to operate Shanganagh Castle as a male juvenile open centre expects to be in a position to present its report shortly. The group is considering all options, including retaining the centre in the prison system for a different prisoner population. I am assured by the director general that the group will consider all submissions and views received from interested parties, including those of the Prison Officers' Association and the Shankill Community Association, in reaching its conclusions.
