Vol. 545 No. 4

Written Answers. - Autism Services.

Liam Aylward

Question:

231 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Health and Children the progress to date on the review undertaken by the South-Eastern Health Board of the needs of persons with autism within the South-Eastern Health Board region; when the required services will be made available; and if they will be based in Myshall, County Carlow. [30409/01]

The South-Eastern Health Board has informed my Department that they are in the process of recruiting a project worker to undertake the review and needs assessment of children and adults with autism for the region which is to be completed within a six month timeframe. The future use of the property in Myshall will be part of this review. The outcome of the review will indicate the quantum, type and location of services required and a strategy for the development of services. This will be discussed with the regional consultative and development committees in order to plan the future residential, respite and other services for children and adults with autism in the health board area.

Final decisions will be taken regarding some projects/services already under consideration for implementation in 2002 following receipt of the board's 2002 letter of determination from my department.
