Vol. 545 No. 5

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business, I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 31 dealing with two different topics. I propose to deal with these topics separately and I will call on Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notices to my office.

In regard to the first topic I have received notice from Deputy Joe Higgins. I call on him to state the matter.

(Dublin West): I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following urgent matter: the murderous assault by the Israeli army on the Palestinian nation causing death and injury to innocent people, following suicide bombing atrocities, which also killed many innocent people. The United States apparently supports this state terror by Israel. There is an urgent need for the Irish Government to break away from the United States Government policies in the Middle East region and to promote an independent policy of self-determination and justice for the Palestinian people as well as a secure state for the Israeli people.

Having given the matter full consideration, I do not consider it to be relevant in accordance with Standing Order 31 and therefore I cannot grant leave to move the motion.

In regard to the second topic I have received notice from Deputy Trevor Sargent. I call on him to state the matter.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to allow the Government to fully outline its response to the severe challenge, which EU Commission fish conservation measures pose for the fishing industry in Ireland and to ensure larger trawlers are kept away from inshore fishing grounds so that the smaller trawlers, which are the backbone of local fishing communities, can survive in the long term.

Having given the matter full consideration, I do not consider it to be in accordance with Standing Order 31 and therefore I cannot grant leave to move the motion.
