Question:

127 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of deaths arising from road traffic accidents over the past five years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [31204/01]

Statistics relating to road accidents, based on information provided by the Garda Síochána, are published by the National Roads Authority in their annual road accident facts reports. The most recent report is in respect of 2000 and that report, along with reports relating to previous years, are available in the Oireachtas Library. Provisional figures for 2001 indicate that 372 people have been killed on the roads to 3 December.

The number of deaths arising from road accidents from 1996 to 2000 is as follows:
