Vol. 546 No. 3

Written Answers. - Flood Relief.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Question:

166 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Finance if he will provide funding for the effective drainage and cleaning of the Cullawha River, Rathmore, County Kerry; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [31604/01]

Flood relief for the Cullawha River, Rathmore, County Kerry, is not currently included in the Office of Public Works programme of flood relief schemes and all resources are committed to completing the flood relief schemes currently in progress. Consequently, there are no plans at present to carry out flood relief works in this area.

Question:

169 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Finance if the Office of Public Works has received reports from Kildare County Council in relation to flood alleviation works required at Celbridge, Straffan, Clane and Leixlip, County Kildare; if he is in a position to provide finance for these works; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [31613/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 167 to 169, inclusive, together.

A report was received from Kildare County Council on the Lyreen and Meadowbrook rivers in the Maynooth area in October 2001. In November 2001 a further report was received on the Morrell river in the Kill-Johnstown area. I understand that reports for other areas are in preparation.

The reports received to date do not contain sufficient information to determine whether viable flood relief schemes can be devised for these areas. Additional data and studies will be required. The Office of Public Works is arranging to meet with officials from Kildare County Council in the near future to discuss this. The Office of Public Works has also advised the county council that it might consider options for minor works to reduce the risk of flooding in appropriate areas.
