Vol. 546 No. 3

Written Answers. - Road Safety.

Denis Naughten

Question:

253 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the results, conclusions and recommendations drawn from the pilot programmes on the daytime use of lights as highlighted in the road safety strategy; the specific programmes performed; the date, duration and organisations involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [31449/01]

The Government Strategy for Road Safety 1998-2002, referred to international interest in, and experience of, daytime running lights, DRL, as an instrument of road safety and stated that DRL warranted serious consideration in Ireland.

Meanwhile, Dublin Corporation, with the support of my Department, is currently making preliminary arrangements which will facilitate the commencement of a pilot DRL campaign. Lessons from the pilot exercise, as well as the views of various groups that have concerns about a general application of DRL together with the outcome of the further examination at EU level, will inform decisions regarding the future promotion of DRL.
