Question:

122 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the number of restoration projects on historical buildings or sites likely to be concluded by the end of 2001; the number and location of new projects scheduled to commence in 2002; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [32127/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 120 and 122 together.

The position is that in 2002 my Department will continue to implement the built and natural elements of the national development plan. In this regard work has been ongoing on many important capital projects such as the replacement of the perimeter paths at St. Stephen's Green, the development of the Mainguard in Clonmel, County Tipperary, and ongoing restoration and improvement works at Clonmacnoise, County Offaly. New projects scheduled to commence in 2002 include the re-roofing of Drumacoo Mausoleum, County Galway, the development of a visitor facility at Quin Abbey, County Clare, the development of visitor facilities at Doneraile Court, County Cork and the restoration of the Palm House at the Botanic Gardens. My Department also has a large number of projects at various stages of design or planning on which it is hoped to make substantial progress in 2002.

While work has commenced on 71 national development plan capital projects in the built heritage area, it is difficult to be definitive about completion dates, given the range of factors that can affect progress in individual cases.
