Vol. 546 No. 4

Written Answers. - Pension Provisions.

Joe Higgins

Question:

96 Mr. Higgins (Dublin West) asked the Minister for Health and Children the steps he will take to announce the pension rights accruing to nurses returning to part-time work in the public health service. [32073/01]

The pension arrangements applicable to staff in the health service, including nurses, are as provided for in the local government superannuation schemes, the voluntary hospital superannuation scheme or the nominated health agency superannuation scheme depending on their place of employment.

Some time ago, following agreement with the health service unions, I announced the introduction of flexible working arrangements in the health service with a view to enhancing the recruitment and retention initiatives that have been put in place. Under this arrangement staff may work on a permanent and pensionable basis for hours other than standard weekly working hours.

Staff may now be recruited to permanent and pensionable part-time positions. Staff recruited to temporary part-time positions will be facilitated in joining their pension scheme after completion of one year's temporary service under a potentially renewable contract.
