269 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding an extension to a school (details supplied) in County Donegal; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [32186/01]

I am pleased to inform the Deputy that an extension of 2268 square metres is being planned for the school in question to cater for a long-term projected enrolment of 950 pupils. The project is progressing through architectural planning.

A stage 4/5 submission – encompassing detail design and bill of quantities – is currently under consideration by the staff in the building unit of my Department.

Architectural planning in respect of a project at the school referred to by the Deputy is under way. It is not possible at this stage to say exactly when the project will go on site.

An application for a permanent extension to the school to which the Deputy refers, is being examined by the planning section of my Department. As part of this examination, factors such as demographic trends, current and pro jected enrolments, staffing levels and the availability of places in other schools in the area will be examined. A decision will then be made on how best to meet the school's long-term accommodation requirements and the school authorities will be notified.

The school is currently in receipt of rental grant aid towards temporary accommodation to cater for its short to medium term accommodation needs.

An application for permanent recognition from the school referred to by the Deputy is being considered by the planning section of my Department.

The school's accommodation requirements will be considered in this context.

Decisions relating to progress of projects will be taken in the light of the recent allocation for primary school buildings in last week's budget.
