Vol. 547 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Lottery.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

429 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Finance if a business (details supplied) in Dublin 8 will be granted a lotto terminal; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2146/02]

While I, as Minister for Finance, have overall responsibility for the national lottery, the day to day commercial operation is a matter for the company itself. However, I have made inquiries in relation to this case and the company has informed me that an application for a lotto terminal was received from the proprietor of the business concerned in September 1993. Due to the removal of a lotto agency from the area, a review was carried out of all applications for that area, including the one referred to. Following this review, the applicant was informed that he was unsuccessful in obtaining a national lottery retail sales agency. The lotto terminal which had been removed from the area was later relocated to another nearby outlet.

Should the applicant still be interested in obtaining an agency it is now necessary for a new application form to be completed. As part of the application process, a bank guarantee or bond is sought from successful applicants. The figure required varies from outlet to outlet and is determined by the prospective sales at the outlet concerned.
