Vol. 547 No. 1

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Appeals.

Paul Bradford

Question:

851 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs when a person (details supplied) in County Cork will be awarded a carer's allowance. [2055/02]

The person concerned, who is in receipt of carer's allowance in respect of her brother applied on the 11 December 2001 for an increase of carer's allowance in respect of her mother. One of the principal conditions for receipt of the allowance are that full-time care and attention is required and being provided. Her application was refused on the grounds that full-time care and attention was not required in this case. She was notified of this decision and of her right of appeal to the social welfare appeals office on 17 January 2002.

The file has now been forwarded to the social welfare appeals office, which will be in contact with the person concerned regarding the outcome of her appeal shortly. Under social welfare legislation, decisions in relation to claims must be made by deciding officers and appeals officers. These officers are statutorily appointed and I have no role in regard to making such decisions.
