Vol. 547 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Equipment.

John Gormley

Question:

921 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he has examined the use of less than lethal weapons such as the bean bag weapon as used in Baltimore, USA; if he has asked the Garda for advice in relation to the matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1245/02]

I have been advised by the Garda authorities that a working group, under the chairmanship of an assistant commissioner, has examined and tested various types of less than lethal weapons, which included live test firing of various projectiles. The group findings were submitted to the Commissioner, who directed the production of a detailed implementation plan, setting out proposed procedures, training, etc. This will be submitted to my Department in due course for consideration.
