Vol. 547 No. 1

Written Answers. - Anti-Drugs Measures.

Seán Haughey

Question:

937 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the measures he has taken since 1997 to deal with the problem of drugs; his plans in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1489/02]

As the Deputy will be aware, the Government views the tackling of the drug problem as a high priority. The policies I have implemented since I became Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform have resulted in a major crackdown on drug trafficking and organised crime generally. I will write to the Deputy shortly setting out in a comprehensive manner the measures which I have taken in this regard.

My approach has been one of strong legislation backed up by the necessary law enforcement measures and supported by a partnership approach with local communities. This combination has resulted in significant drug seizures, major Irish drug trafficking organisations being dismantled and local communities being actively involved in dealing with problems in their own areas.

"Building on Experience – National Drugs Strategy 2001-2008" marks the first time that all elements of the drugs policy in Ireland have been brought together into a single framework with responsibilities clearly assigned. It sets out a policy framework through which all those involved in addressing this problem can work for the next seven years. My Department, in conjunction with the other relevant Departments and agencies responsible for delivering on drugs policies, will be actively involved in bringing the strategy forward.
