1026 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the position regarding the provision of a closed circuit television system in Castlebar, County Mayo; when this system will be approved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2719/02]
I announced in late 2000 that the number of Garda CCTV systems was to be increased. As part of the first tranche of this expansion, CCTV systems are to be installed in the following areas: Athlone, Bray, Clondalkin, Dundalk, Dun Laoghaire, Finglas, Galway, Limerick, Waterford and Tallaght. It is anticipated that these ten CCTV systems will be installed by the end of 2002.
At least a further six areas will commence in 2003 and they will be announced in due course. As I have indicated previously, an application for a Garda CCTV system in Castlebar is being considered in the context of this programme.
