Vol. 547 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Gerry Reynolds

Question:

1289 Mr. G. Reynolds asked the Minister for Education and Science if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 324 of 27 November 2001, he will indicate whether the information given therein is correct; and if he will request immediate talks to take place to allow the building of a new school to start urgently. [2265/02]

The educational worksheet referred to in Parliamentary Question 324 of 27 November 2001 has been completed. A condition survey was carried out on the existing school buildings on 25 January. A schedule of overall accommodation will be drawn up shortly in consultation with the school authorities.

The schedules of accommodation will provide details of the extent of accommodation needed by the new community school, so as soon as these are available, my Department will be in a position to approve the commencement of architectural planning.

This is an unusual situation in that the vocational school and the post-primary school amalgamating into the proposed new community school already share pupils and facilities and operate from a single timetable. In these circumstances, my Department with the agreement of all parties has communicated mainly with the County Leitrim VEC in connection with this project. It is envisaged that as the project develops and following the establishment of a board of management for the new community school that communication will then be with the board.
