Vol. 547 No. 2

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

P. J. Sheehan

Question:

17 Mr. Sheehan asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of new national schools his Department plans to build in the constituency of Cork South-West during 2002; the names of the proposed schools; the locations of same; the number of national schools to be reconstructed and upgraded in the constituency of Cork South-West; and the names and location of such schools proposed. [2709/02]

The allocation for primary school buildings in 2002 is €153.6 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates the Government's commitment to improving accommodation in primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997. Because of the greatly increased level of activity in the primary buildings area since this Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major and minor building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity. Records are not prepared on a constituency basis. However, I will be pleased to provide the Deputy with information on any specific building project on which he may have an interest.
