Vol. 547 No. 3

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Ned O'Keeffe

Question:

424 Mr. N. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education and Science the progress which has been made in relation to a secondary school project (details supplied) in County Cork. [3607/02]

The allocation for post primary buildings in 2002 is €182.31 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates the Government's commitment to improving accommodation in post primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997. Due to the greatly increased level of investment in the post primary buildings area since this Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major and minor building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.

An extension project is currently at stage 4/5 of architectural planning – detailed design and bill of quantities – for the school to which the Deputy refers. Officials of my Department are currently examining this submission and a letter will issue to the school's management authority as soon as possible.

My Department received an application from Mullingar community college, County Westmeath, that included the provision of a lift and additional car parking. On 23 November 2001, my Department grant-aided elements of this project in the amount of €304,737.14. In relation to the provision of a sports hall at the college, approval in principle has also been given for this project. My Department is currently preparing PE hall templates. These will standardise the construction of PE halls at second level schools and will reduce the architectural planning processes considerably. The templates are being piloted in four schools initially and are currently awaiting a decision on planning permission.
