My review of legislation, procedures and practice in respect of economic immigration is ongoing. Analysis of how the system has been operating, together with changes in the wider economic environment, has contributed to the introduction of the new procedures for recruitment of non-EEA personnel introduced with effect from 2 January last.
I am also considering our longer-term needs for personnel from outside the European economic area and how these might best be met over the coming decade. The experience gained in implementing the new work permit procedures and the degree of success in recruiting necessary personnel from within the EEA, including Ireland, will inform any further changes in this area.
I am also considering the adequacy of the existing legal framework relating to the recruitment and employment of non-EEA personnel and I plan to bring proposals to the Government in this regard in the very near future.
