Vol. 548 No. 2

Written Answers. - Teaching Qualifications.

Richard Bruton

Question:

439 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the qualification requirements for a French national to teach French at second level in a permanent capacity; and if he will consider relaxing these requirements to reflect the current demands of the language curriculum. [4409/02]

The Registration Council is the statutory body which determines, with the approval of the Minister for Education and Science, the qualification requirements for the purposes of registration as a secondary teacher. The council requires that each applicant for registration as a secondary teacher must hold a suitable third level degree in an approved curricular subject, such as French, as well as a suitable teacher training qualification.

The qualification requirements for the purposes of appointment to permanent teaching positions in vocational, community and comprehensive schools are determined by my Department and may be summarised as a relevant primary degree – that is, in the subject in the title of the post – and, in the case of community or comprehensive schools, a suitable teacher training qualification. There are no proposals at present to amend these requirements.
