Vol. 548 No. 4

Written Answers. - Strategic Management Initiative.

John Bruton

Question:

190 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the updated achievement of each target set for her Department under the strategic management initiative; if the targets in question are sufficiently measurable, quantifiable and focused on outcomes rather than activities to be an effective tool of real accountability; and if not, if she proposes to refine the targets. [5181/02]

I am satisfied that my Department's recent statement of strategy, produced under the provisions of the Public Service Management Act, 1997, in respect of the period from 2001 to 2004 contains measurable, quantifiable and focused targets in the form of core policy goals, strategic objectives, strategies for implementation and relevant performance indicators.

As required under the reporting provisions of the Public Services Management Act, my Department produces and publishes each year an annual report setting out progress in implementing the objectives in my Department's statement of strategy. The report in respect of the year 2001 is currently in preparation and a copy will be laid before both Houses of the Oireachtas in due course.
