Question:

83 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he will provide information (details supplied) in relation to licence renewals for fish farms for the breeding or culti vation of salmonoid species since the coming into force of the Fisheries Act, 1997; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5047/02]

The licences for salmonoid cultivation, listed in the following tabular statement have been renewed, without any increase in tonnage, since the Fisheries (Amendment) Act, 1997, came into force.

While not provided for in the Fisheries (Amendment) Act, 1997, in the interests of transparency, my Department decided that all subsequent licence renewal applications should undergo public consultation, with notice of the application published in a relevant local newspaper.
