Vol. 548 No. 5

Written Answers. - Visa Applications.

Olivia Mitchell

Question:

391 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if arrangements will be made, possibly through the Secondary Schools Principals' Association or the renewal of visas, for young non-nationals attending boarding schools here; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5735/02]

I presume the Deputy is referring to the renewal of permission to remain by non-EEA nationals residing in the State as students. The position is that such renewal takes place at the immigration registration office, Harcourt Square, Dublin 2 for persons resident in the Dublin area and at the relevant Garda superintendent's office for persons residing outside of the Dublin area.

I understand from the Garda authorities that from time to time requests are made in relation to providing special appointments for persons who, for good reason, cannot attend a Garda registration office during normal working hours. No such request has been received in relation to young non-EEA nationals attending boarding schools in the State. In the event that any such request was made to the Garda authorities, I am informed that every effort would be made to provide appointments outside of normal schools hours or at weekends as appropriate.
