Vol. 549 No. 3

Written Answers. - Coastal Protection.

John Gormley

Question:

116 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if moneys allocated in 2001 for beach protection at Garretstown, County Cork, have been spent; the other protective measures to be put in place; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6724/02]

Primary responsibility for coastal protection works rest with the property owner, be that a local authority or a private individual. In 2001, my Department allocated funding of €190,460.71 to Cork County Council towards road protection works at Garretstown, costing a total of €253,947.62. The local authority did not, however, undertake these works last year. In October 2001, my Department wrote to all coastal local authorities inviting proposals for consideration in the context of the 2002 coastal protection programme. Cork County Council listed Garretstown as its number one priority. The question of providing funding for these works in 2002 will be considered in the context of the funding available and overall national priorities.
