Vol. 550 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Emergency Plan.

Michael D. Higgins

Question:

41 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of local authorities which have responded to his request to review their major emergency plans and local plans, including plans for security and protection, of water resources and drinking water supplies; the number of plans which have been updated; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6969/02]

The reviewing and updating of their major emergency plans is a matter for the individual local authorities having regard to the Government approved framework for a co-ordinated response to major emergency and in the light of relevant developments, changes in contact details for agencies and personnel, etc.

In the aftermath of the events of 11 September 2001 local authorities were requested to review these plans, including plans for security and protection of water resources and drinking water supplies, to ensure that they are up to date and effective.

My Department met the City and County Managers Association in December 2001 and it is satisfied that arrangements are in place to ensure major emergency plans are updated and co-ordinated with other emergency services at local level.
