Vol. 550 No. 1

Written Answers. - Coastal Protection.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

64 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the progress being made regarding the protection of the Cunnigar in Dungarvan Harbour, County Waterford; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7278/02]

Primary responsibility for coast protection works rests with the property owner, whether that is a private individual or a local authority. In 2000 my Department provided funding of €26,550.72, £20,910.39, to Waterford County Council towards the total cost of €35,400.96, £27,880.52, for the detailed design stage of coast protection works at Cunnigar. In October 2001 my Department wrote to all coastal local authorities requesting proposals for consideration in the context of the 2002 coast protection programme. Waterford County Council has submitted a proposal in respect of works at Cunnigar. The question of funding coast protection works at the location will be considered in the context of the funding available for coast protection works in 2002 and overall national priorities.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

65 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if his attention has been drawn to the further damage and destruction caused by recent storms at the Warren Strand Rosscarbery, County Cork; if he will clear the obstacles to the coastal protection project and in particular the foreshore licence and funding; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7392/02]

Primary responsibility for coast protection works rest with the property owner, whether that is a private individual or a local authority. Cork County Council has submitted proposals in relation to coast protection works at the Warren Strand for consideration by my Department. The county council has not communicated with my Department concerning further damage caused at the Warren Strand by the recent storms. I have approved the granting of a foreshore lease to Cork County Council to enable coast protection works to be carried out at the Warren. Cork County Council requested an amendment to the terms of the lease and this is the subject of ongoing discussions between the council and the Chief State Solicitor. It is expected this matter will be resolved shortly. The question of funding coast protection works at the Warren Strand is being given priority by my Department.
